Bloco: Filhos de Gandhy
Founded in 1949 by a group of dock workers, Filhos de Gandhy (Sons of Gandhi), was inspired by Gandhi's revolution in India. Unable to afford traditional Carnival costumes, the members of the group adapted simple white sheets and towels as their costume. The Filhos de Gandhy, the largest Carnival group on the circuit with over 8,000 revelers, parade through the streets of Salvador to a style of music called afoxé, a music derived from the Afro-Brazilian religion, Candomblé. An all-male bloco, the Filhos de Gandhy take to the streets of Carnival draped in blue and white beaded necklaces which they trade for kisses.
