Olodum is the most well know of the Bloco Afros. They regularly represent Brazil at international events such as the World Cup. They have achieved international recognition through their recordings with Paul Simon, Michael Jackson, and Herbie Hancock among others. Founded in 1979 in Pelourinho, the heart of Salvador’s historic center, their original mission was to provide a place in Carnival for their neighborhood's disfranchised residents. Since their inception, they have continued their commitment to the community and have gone on to develop socially conscious projects including a theatre group, a school, and a youth band.
