Daniela Mercury is one of the biggest stars in the galaxy of Brazilian music, and one of the few Axé stars to have achieved international acclaim. Daniela started singing with Banda Eva in 1986 before leaving the band in 1988 to become a back up singer for Gilberto Gil. In 1992, she went solo, and signed a record deal with Sony records. Big time success followed with her album, Canto da Cidade, which had three singles reach number one on the Brazilian charts. Daniela has shared the stage with some of the biggest recording artists in the world. For the 1994 World Cup, she recorded a memorable beer commercial with the legendary Ray Charles. And in 2004, she was invited to sing with Paul McCartney at the Nobel Peace Prize award. Daniela has won best Carnival song in 1997 for Rapunzel and in 2004 for Maimbê Dandá, which also reached #1 on the Brazilian Charts.

In 1999, Daniela started a new trend when she inaugurated her Trio Techno and brought a new Electronica sound to Carnival. While initially this new direction was not well received, time has shown her to be a trail blazer; the Electronica sound she was pioneering has since found a home in Carnival and international DJ's like David Guetta and Fatboy Slim have become Carnival regulars. Daniela's bloco, Crocodilo, has wide appeal including a substantial following among the gay community.
